RSS (MWD) Lab Technician

Do you have some electrical and mechanical skills that you’d like to put to work? Do you have the ability to use critical thinking skills to solve problems and figure out why something may have stopped working? Would you like to be able to use those skills in an organization that will listen to your input and works quickly to make improvements? Do you think of yourself as a team player who follows instructions when they exist and can help make those instructions when they don’t?

Sparrow Downhole Tools is an emerging player in the Rotary Steerable Drilling Tool market, and we are hiring lab technicians. Like MWD tools, Rotary Steerable Tools contain electrical and mechanical elements, and our lab technicians must become adept at both aspects. Lab technician work involves using various hand and power tools to disassemble, clean, inspect, and reassemble basic mechanical assemblies and using lab electrical equipment and computers to inspect electrical equipment for re-use. Lab technician work is generally performed at our facility in South East Calgary though some in-town excursions may be required. The work contains elements of mechanic skills, data entry, and the types of skills that might be required for smartphone or another electronic equipment repair. The job is not particularly physically demanding or dirty, but the ability to lift items of up to 60 lbs up to a tabletop level is sometimes required.

Prior lab technician experience is preferred, but we also have roles available for individuals without experience. Candidates without experience should be able to demonstrate an understanding of basic electrical principles and the desire to learn on the job.

What you can Expect from us:

  • A friendly team environment

  • An environment where hard work and excellence are appreciated and rewarded

  • Compensation ranging from $60,000 to $85,000, depending on prior experience

  • The opportunity to work on advanced drilling technology

  • The opportunity to be a key part of a small company and play an active role in growth and success

  • The opportunity to grow your skills and abilities

  • Advancement opportunities

 What we expect from you:

  • Some prior lab technician experience or a reasonable facsimile thereof

  • Some manner of post secondary technical training

  • Basic electrical technician abilities like soldering small wires and use of a multi-meter and oscilloscope

  • The ability to follow instructions precisely

  • The ability to make relevant observations and use those observations to make judgements about component quality

  • The ability to use observations to perform root cause analysis

  • Strong organizational skills and self discipline

  • Basic computer skills (MS Word and Excel)

  • The ability to stay self motivated and work independently

  • The ability to work within a team and to contribute effectively

We offer a true start-up experience where quick results matter and innovation is strongly emphasized. You will experience all aspects of the company, from customer interaction to field testing and even company strategy. You may be a well-experienced technician looking to see something more interesting, or you may be relatively new to the field and are looking for a way to advance your career in exchange for giving us 100% of your effort.

Either way, if you are willing to bring your energy and passion to work with us, we have a place for you to contribute to something big. Please apply with a resume and cover letter that describes what you hope to bring to a position with Sparrow.

At this point we are considering only local applicants, so if you’re located in Calgary and are looking to join a great team then drop us a line. Applications can be sent to jjohnston@sparrowtech.ca
